Method 2: Authenticated SMTP
Note: Microsoft is deprecating authenticated SMTP( basic auth) in September 2025, so this option is not recommended. See more information here.
1. Requirements:
• User account with Exchange license
• Multi-factor authentication( MFA) disabled i. Conditional access policy can be setup to disable MFA for connections from Protech’ s IP range. Use IP list in step 4 above.
• SMTP Auth needs to be enabled for the mailbox. Microsoft has been disabling SMTP auth by default.
• User account password expiration should be set to never expire or password will need to be updated on every password change.
2. Setup a new user in your Azure AD tenant
• User principal name( UPN) should match the‘ From’ e-mail address that will be used to send e-mails from MX( e. g. members @ domain. org)
• If UPN does not match the e-mail address, delegate permissions need to be configured to allow the new UPN to“ Send As” the other e-mail address.
3. Assign an Exchange Online license to enable the user for e-mail 4. Enable SMTP Auth for the new mailbox
• See section Enable SMTP AUTH for specific mailboxes
• Microsoft considers SMTP Auth a legacy Authentication method and has it disabled by default under their Global Security Defaults, these will have to be disabled to enable SMTP Auth.
• If Conditional Access is being used instead of the Global Security Defaults and the“ Block Legacy Authentication” is enabled the user setup in Step 2 will need to be granted an exception from this policy in addition to enabling SMTP Auth on the mailbox
5. Login to your MX website as a user with administrator web role and navigate to‘ My Profile’ page.
